Doc. Dr Nikola Cmiljanic is a professor at the Faculty of Information Technology, where he teaches and delivers courses in digital forensics, computer systems, information security and digital trace analysis. His academic engagement is focused on connecting theory with practical application through lab exercises, case studies and work on real scenarios, with the goal of transferring modern concepts, procedures and methodologies used in digital forensics practice.
Academic engagement
Teaching is focused on contemporary digital forensics approaches through practical laboratory exercises, case analysis and real-scenario simulations. Special emphasis is placed on methodology, procedural documentation and understanding digital traces in the context of evidence.
Expert witness work and methodology
Alongside teaching and scientific-professional work, he serves as a court expert and specialist in digital forensics and computer evidence, with significant experience in collecting, examining and analyzing digital evidence, preparing expert findings and opinions, and providing expert testimony before competent courts. Procedures are carried out with consistent application of professional standards and best practices, with emphasis on precision, verifiability and clarity of findings.
His work includes analysis of a wide range of digital sources and artifacts, including mobile devices and computers, operating-system content and traces, communications (messages, email, applications), network and internet traces, as well as multimedia files (audio/video) and metadata.
Special attention is devoted to preserving evidence integrity, orderly procedural documentation and chain of custody, as well as reproducibility of analytical steps, in order to ensure reliability and legal usability of the results.
His experience includes a large number of digital evidence cases, with cooperation involving prosecutors, courts, attorneys, as well as legal entities and private individuals. The professional approach includes discretion, impartiality and responsible communication, with the goal of presenting complex technical issues clearly and usefully in proceedings.
He combines an academic perspective with practical experience, enabling expert findings to be grounded in contemporary knowledge and methods, while respecting legal and procedural requirements.
